Why did Obi Wan Kenobi have to die to become more powerful?

I never liked it when Darth Vader struck Obi Wan Kenobi.

It seemed like a terrible choice on the writers part.

Obi Wan Kenobi could have struck Darth Vader and defeated evil for good.

The storyline is flawed.
